My First Three Poems

September 26, 2023 Sarah Hinlicky Wilson

Galoshes

When the water sloshes
It’s time to put on your galoshes!

Classical Music

Rock-n-roll music, it’s O.K.
Classical is much better.
But as the music gets sweeter and sweeter
My eyes get wetter and wetter.

Mouserel

Little and skittery
Jumpy and jittery
Stopping then scuttering
Tiny heart fluttering
Up the vent down the pipe
Looking for cheese that’s ripe
Tripping into the trap
And squishing with a
SNAP!

(Words and photo by Sarah Hinlicky Wilson. So far as I can remember, “Galoshes” was composed when I was about five, “Classical Music” when I was about eight. “Mouserel,” inspired by learning the term “doggerel,” was the triumph of my high school creative writing class. Let’s face it, my poetic kinship lies with Ogden Nash, not Keats or Wordworth.)
